George Soros Supports Civil Action in Ferguson

George Soros’ initiatives go beyond supporting minority groups but empowering them to voice their thoughts and ideals. It is evident in the Ferguson protests when Soros, through his OSF initiative, donated approximately $33 billion to support the already established groups in Ferguson. The donation was aimed at helping them to participate in democratic governance by combining policy, research, and data collection in a way that the society becomes accountable. As such, some groups developed editorials to distribute to various new media houses to keep the story alive while others formed grass-roots coalitions through social media platform. Note that Soros’s Open Society Foundations had been funding the groups since the early 90’s, hence the funds were not channeled to compel the groups to protest. Other Soros’ funded groups like the Make the Road New York, Drug Policy Alliance, and the Center for Community Change in Washington joined in the Ferguson gatherings and demonstrations in Missouri.

Open Society Foundations

George has put a lot of resources toward philanthropy in a bid to promote democratic ideals that are now estimated to be over $12 billion. His funding initiatives support individuals and organizations around the world in promoting transparency, freedom of expression, justice, and equality with a primary focus on minority groups. One such initiative is the Open Society Foundations, a network of partners, projects, and foundations operating in over 100 countries also promoting freedom of expression and respect for individual human rights. George launched the organization using fortunes earned from his hedge fund. Open Society Foundations’ name, operations, and influence are based on one of Soros philosopher, Karl Popper. According to Popper, no ideology provides the final truth and societies can only thrive in an environment that allows democratic governance and freedom to express one’s views and opinions. About George Soros

He was born in 1930 during the Nazi-Germany occupation in Hungary to a Jewish family. In 1936 Soros’ family changed name from the German-Jewish Schwartz to Soros to protect themselves from the increasing racist Hungary. Soros immigrated to England in 1947 where he enrolled for a bachelor’s degree at the London School of Economics and later a master in philosophy. George began his career in business at an early age by taking on jobs in different merchant banks before forming his first hedge fund in 1969. While a student at the London School of Economics, he engaged in a variety of odd jobs; from a waiter to a railway porter to selling fancy goods to souvenir shops. At this time he also wrote to different merchant banks in London looking for a job. In 1954, however, George Soros commenced his financial career after Singer & Friedlander of London merchant bank offered him a clerical job and later moved him to the arbitrage department. George then moved to F.M. Mayer in 1956 where he began specializing in European stocks. Here, he worked for three years before joining Wertheim & Co. as a European stock analyst until 1959.
