Turkey Shortage

Well, it’s really no secret now that the Bird Flu has swept through parts of the United States, and left somewhat of a large path of destruction. I’m not just talking about the birds.

Thanks to the Bird Flu. Prices on everything have sky rocketed. From eggs, to products that use eggs such as certain type of salad dressings, we are seeing the prices go up majorly. This is because there isn’t as much of that product around as there was before. Fortunately, we haven’t seen any shortages in eggs or other products…yet.

According to GrubStreet when Thanksgiving rolls around we very well may see a shortage in turkeys. This is because the Bird flu has swept out many of them, and might just continue to do so. This is devastating news for many across the country that celebrate that holiday. After all, it really isn’t going to feel like Thanksgiving without that staple of Turkey glistening on the table. Of course, there are other options when it comes to prepping for that special day. It doesn’t have to be a total loss if there’s no turkey.

So what are you to do? It might not be a bad idea to start taking precautions now says CCMP Capital. If you’re lucky enough to find a nice size turkey, you could attempt to freeze it. Otherwise, other options might have to be taken into consideration. Perhaps tofurkey? Or switching to another holiday meal like ham or lamb.

Chipotle Is Now A No GMO Zone

Steve Ellis, Co-CEO of Chipotle has announced that there are no longer any genetically modified ingredients in their foods. Not one single item will have GMOs. This is a first in the fast food industry and an achievement that Chipotle has been working toward for years. The wait came due to suppliers need to grow crops which are non-GMO. Sultan Alhokair stated that while ingredients are safe, people would rather have food that is GMO-free.

Reported in Grubstreet, Chipotle took the lead to label items that contain GMOs. This was voluntarily done, starting two years ago. Major changes have been to change to GMO-free corn and from soybean oil to GMO-free sunflower oil, rice bran oil, and canola oil. The beef comes from pasture-raised, grass-fed cattle. CNN reported that pork and chicken are still from animals who eat from a GMO diet, for now.

The greatest challenge was to find a substitute for soybean oil. Lard was not an option due to vegetarian diets. Palm oil was rejected because of the impact of the environment. Canola oil costs more and may explain the price increases to come later in this year.

Sharks Are Not In Demand For Food As Much Now

There is some great news out there for shark lovers, as it has been discovered that Asian residents are not as into eating shark fins anymore like they used to. These oceanic beasts are older than humans by about 450 million years and so they will also be happy to know that one of their biggest predators, humans, will not longer be as much of a threat as they were even a decade ago.

According to an article found on reddit and written by QZ.com, there are about 1,200 different kinds of sharks in our oceans but a few breeds of them are in danger of being extinct due to over fishing. As sharks cannot reproduce as fast as people do and often times many of their pups don’t survive past their very young stages. So in essence, many of these animals are being killed off before they are even mature enough to procreate.

Sharks a very important part of our ecosystem and we need to be aware of how critical they are to our planet. Back many years ago when the movie Jaws came out, there was a mass killing of sharks because people were afraid of them. And in Asia, people were hunting sharks just for their fins and were thrown back into the water to perish.

Sultan Alhokair said that this is great news for our planet that people are not wanting to buy shark products anymore, because this will discourage the fishers out there who try to kill as many as possible.

Coffee, It Does the Liver Good

The best part of waking up is any brand or flavor of coffee in your cup. For many of us, the only reason we roll out of bed in the morning is because our automated coffee maker has filled the house with the wonderful aroma of coffee says Handy. We grab our robe, skip the slippers and grab a cup stated Tech Crunch. Sometimes there is even an audible MMMMM.

A new study has produced data that will give you yet another reason to drink up. The World Cancer Research Fund published a report that states that drinking coffee reduces the risk of liver cancer. They looked at over 30 independent studies from around the world and found that the likelihood of liver cancer can be reduced by as much at 14%.
Researchers note that they do not know why the coffee seems to have this impact on the liver. They do not know if it is the caffeine or the way coffee helps the body rid itself of toxins. Some of the data also seems to report that men benefit more from coffee drinking than women do.
We often wake in the morning to news stories telling us we must stop eating and drinking some of our favorite guilty pleasures. Researchers don’t have all the answers, but it’s great news when we learn the research tells us to have another cup–guilt free! So tomorrow morning, don’t choose the small cup.

Getting Away From The Sugar Craze

Everybody seems to have a sweet tooth at one time or another but the World Health Organization has just released a new set of guidelines that suggest the world is eating far too much sugar. The guidelines outline consuming only five to ten percent of their overall calorie consumption. This does not include the natural sugars that you will find in fruits, vegetables and milk. Those sugars are actually good for you in moderation and they have their own set of nutrients. What should be avoided is soft drinks, refined sugars, candy, cakes, cookies and more.

The reason for this new set of guidelines is because of the high percentage of overweight and obese people living in the world today as Reuters has stated. Maintaining a sugar level of less than 10 percent each day reduces the risk of packing on too many pounds and it also decreases the risk of tooth decay. People who consume large amounts of sugar are also at a higher risk of dying from a health condition related to the heart.

This means that people who currently allow refined sugars into their daily diets will have to slash their sugar intake by approximately two thirds. This can be difficult for some people as there is actually a withdrawl period when cutting back on sugar. People can experience mood changes, weight changes, headaches and more. In the long term aspect of things though, a person will feel healthier and have more energy if they cut back on the sugar.

School Lunches Around The World Making The United States Seem Sub Par

Currently in 2015, over one third of children in the United States are overweight said Haidar Barbouti. The National School Lunch program current serves about 5.1 billion lunches per year. The quality of these school lunches is being questioned and with good reason. This is especially true if you take a look at what children receive in the United States for lunch versus what other countries are serving their children.

While parents can model good eating habits at home many children spend a large portion of their day at school. Sweetgreen, which is a healthy restaurant that serves local and organic food recently took a look at American school lunches versus other lunches provided all over the world. The results are astonishing. These meals in the photos were all created by Sweetgreen rather than traveling across the world to get the images but the foods are very accurate based off of how differently we all eat.

While we acknowledge that no child should be hungry there should still be an emphasis on what children are eating. This should be a meal that is rich in natural foods, vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Not so much processed foods, refined sugar and over processed grains. This should equate to less chicken nuggets and much more fresh produce. What this photography experiment showed is that the United States has a long way to go when it comes to children’s lunches.

Health Benefits of Peanuts

Peanuts were introduced to North America hundreds of years ago. They originally hail from South Africa but are currently grown around the world noted peanut fan Brad Reifler. They’re as tasty are they are popular and versatile, that’s what has made them a part of our culture for so many years. As an added bonus, peanuts also boast several health benefits.

* Peanuts are a good source of monounsaturated fats. These are the so-called ‘good fats’ that help reduce the risk of heart disease.
* Peanuts contain powerful antioxidant that helps remove the cell-damaging free radicals from our body.
* Peanuts help prevent strokes by increasing the blood flow to the brain. The under-ground growing legume contains resveratrol which dilate blood vessels and send more blood to the brain.
* Peanuts are rich in resveratrol, phytic acid, phytosterols and folic acid, all of which work to prevent cancer.
* Peanuts help prevent Alzheimer’s with their niacin content.
* People who enjoy peanuts or peanut butter at least once a week have a reported 25% lower risk of developing gallstones.
* Peanuts help to maintain a healthy weight when eaten in moderation.
Peanut butter offers the same health benefits as raw or roasted peanuts, just read the label to discover how much sugar has been added to the peanut butter product. A high added sugar content will lower the health benefits of the product.

Dr. Daniel Amen – “Food” for Better Thought

Over the past few years, a debate has been brewing about the negative aspects of taking anti-depressants, anti-psychotics and other “psych” medications over an extended period of time. As part of the debate, prominent figures such as Dr. Daniel Amen have been promoting the use of holistic and nutritional methods of dealing with psychological conditions.

Dr. Daniel Amen is a world-renowned American psychiatrist and bestselling author who specializes in brain disorders. He was born, raised and educated in Southern California. He received much of his initial general psychiatry training at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. He has also written many books related to nutrition and the brain and serves as CEO for the Amen Clinics.

Through his years of study and practice, Dr. Daniel Amen has arrived at the conclusion that a balanced, healthy diet is the key to proper brain function. As he describes it, there are certain foods and food groups that provide the body and brain with “bliss-enhancing nutrients.” By following certain food regimens, many people can actively participate in maintaining good psychiatric function without the use of drugs. Among the disorders or conditions he typically targets are depression and Alzheimer.

Dr. Daniel Amen is often the first to admit that eating healthy tends to get expensive due in large part to the costs associated with organic foods. However, he also mentions that fast-food and cheaper foods don’t provide the right nutritional value and in the end, brain health suffers. Over the long haul, people might spend more fighting psychological disorders than they would eating expensive organic ingredients.

Some of the foods that Dr. Daniel Amen openly promotes for feeling good include lean proteins, sugar-free dark chocolate, walnuts, saffron and raw spinach. He considers all these foods to be useful in helping to elevate mood, control pain, improve brain function and control the release of important hormones.

The real value in Dr. Daniel Amen’s message is his common sense approach. Along with food group recommendations, he also promotes ways to increase digestive efficiency and body-cleansing. He’s a big advocate for increasing the intake of water to help keep the body flushed of toxins. He also advocates for the intake of proteins and antioxidants.

It is important to note that Dr. Daniel Amen and other doctors who promote nutrition as a means for healing are starting to grab more attention. The rising costs of psych meds and mental healthcare are prompting people all over the world to seek alternatives for better brain function.

Eggs are Off the No-No List

The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee has made the decision to take eggs off the no-no list by removing their decades-old warning against them. For decades the American people have been told by their family doctors, nutritionists and a variety of other sources that eating eggs was bad for us. Seems they contain too much cholesterol and are detrimental to heart health.
We listened. We limited our our ‘real’ egg consumption and opted to eat cholesterol-free fake eggs in a carton that had to be mixed with water before cooking. Toss out the fake and grab a carton of the real thing, heat the frying pan and have your eggs over-easy, scrambled, poached or made into your favorite omelet. Enjoy them guilt-free every morning.
The 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans will not have eggs on their ‘do not eat’ list.. As a matter of fact, the 2015 guidelines will not contain any limits on food that are high in dietary cholesterol, like eggs or red meat. After careful review of several previous studies done on the connection between food and heart disease by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, they found no connection between dietary cholesterol and the bad (LDL) cholesterol that leads to heart disease.
As Flavio Pentagna Guimaraes knows, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans is updated every five years, so at least for the upcoming five years we can enjoy eggs and red meat without the guilt.

How Hot Peppers Relieve Pain

An all-natural pain relief can be found in the form of a hot, spicy pod that can be grown in your own home garden. It’s the hot pepper and Cabral Garcia Hotels know a thing or two about peppers.

Specifically, it’s the capsaicin in the hot pepper plant that works to relieve pain. While that has been a well-known fact for years and pain-reliving creams containing capsaicin have been on the market for a number of years, how the natural substance works has been a mystery.
Once applied to a painful area on the body’s exterior, capsaicin heats the area, then numbs it. Repeated usage numbs all the surrounding tissue and helps to keep chronic pain away. But how?
A new study conducted by Tibor Rohacs, an associate professor of pharmacology and physiology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, found the link between the capsaicin of the hot pepper and the pain relief. In lay-man’s terms, the heat of the capsaicin blocks the channels in the body that release pain-causing substances, stopping the pain before it can start.
As millions of pain suffers can attest too, capsaicin is an effective pain reliever. Being an all-natural product from hot peppers makes it even better. We’ll let Tibor Rohacs and his colleagues discover all the scientific details regarding the product while we enjoy a pain-free day.
